David
M. Jones has been playing in blues, reggae, and rock and roll
bands in the Upper Midwest for over 16 years. He has released
two CDs of original material and has written dozens of songs.
David performed on many stages around the region during a
10-year residence in the Twin Cities before moving to Eau
Claire, Wisconsin in August 2000. David has played in solo and
duet formats as well as a 4-piece combo with a full band sound.
Now, the most familiar format for the Jones Tones is a 3-piece
trio featuring acoustic guitar, bass, drums, with distinctive
vocals and song selection.
Some of David’s career
highlights include shows in the main room at First Avenue in
Minneapolis with regional and national stars. He has opened for
Who bassist John Entwhistle, Jamaican reggae bands Boom Shaka
and Mojo Nya, and perennial Twin Cities favorites, The Maroons.
He has shared stages with Martin Zellar (Gear Daddies), Grant
Hart (Husker Du), and Dave Murphy (Soul Asylum). David and
Kingston Blue also backed Tiny Tim in a memorable Twin Cities
performance in 1994.
David holds a Ph.D. from the
University of Minnesota in Literature and Afro-American Studies,
and is a member of the English Department faculty at the
University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Along with three student
researchers at UWEC, David has developed a radio show, Jazz and
Beyond, now being broadcast on
WUEC (89.7), featuring blues, jazz, and Wisconsin musicians.
The broadcasts will resume on Sunday, May 18, at 6 p.m., and
will continue through most of June. Since moving to Eau Claire,
David has also produced a series of public programs on African
American culture and music for the Eau Claire Public Library.
His future plans include research on African American musicians
in the Upper Midwest and of course, more live music!
